9 Bible Contradictions

By Brother Anderson

Here are nine instances where Ellen White directly contradicts the Holy Bible:

1. Did Satan Deceive Adam?

Ellen White Holy Bible
Satan, who is the father of lies, deceived Adam in a similar way, telling him that he need not obey God, that he would not die if he transgressed the law. Evangelism, p. 598.

Adam believed the lie of Satan, the wily insinuations against the character of God. Review and Herald, April 5, 1898.

Eve yielded to temptation, and through her influence Adam also was deceived. They accepted the words of the serpent... Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4 (1884), p. 352.

And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 1 Timothy 2:14

NOTE: In Genesis 3:12-13 the Bible says Eve was "deceived" by the serpent, but never says anything about Adam being deceived.1

2. Was Israel destroyed by Gluttony?

Ellen White Holy Bible
God granted their desire, giving them flesh, and leaving them to eat till their gluttony produced a plague. Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 148 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague. Numbers 11:33

NOTE: The plague fell before the people could even consume the food. The people were punished for coveting, not gluttony. Coveting is a craving for something forbidden by God. Gluttony is habitual over-eating. Coveting and gluttony are two very different problems. Gluttony is never mentioned in Numbers 11:33-34. The Bible is clear the people died for the sin of craving. They never had a chance to be gluttons because they died while the food was still in their mouth, as the New King James Version says, "before it was chewed."

The Israelites had violated the 10th commandment which forbids man from coveting that which is unlawful for him to have. Because craving or coveting is forbidden by God's covenant with Israel, God could execute capital punishment upon the lawbreakers. On the contrary, gluttony is not explicitly forbidden in God's covenant with Israel. So why would God punish people with death for a sin which was not forbidden in His covenant with Israel? God punishes people according to the degree of their sin. If the Israelites' sin was a violation of God's covenant with Israel (the 10 commandments) then God was justified in delivering the appropriate punishment for that violation--in this case, death. However, gluttony was not a violation of the Ten Commandments, and nowhere in the Bible do we find over-eating being punished by death.

3. Can we be certain of our salvation?

Ellen White Holy Bible
Those who accept the Saviour, however sincere their conversion, should never be taught to say or feel that they are saved. Christ's Object Lessons, p. 155 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life... 1 John 5:13

NOTE: The reason the apostle John wrote his letter was to assure the believers that they had obtained eternal life. In Ephesians 2:8 in the New King James Version Bible, it says, "For by grace you HAVE BEEN saved..." The Greek verb for "have been" is este which is in the perfect tense. The perfect tense conveys a completed action.

4. Are we "condemned sinners" when in Christ?

Ellen White Holy Bible
Are you in Christ? Not if you do not acknowledge yourselves erring, helpless, condemned sinners. Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 48 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1

NOTE: Paul emphatically states there is "no condemnation" for those who are in Christ. The believer who is "in Christ" is no longer under "condemnation but is passed from death unto life." (John 5:24) The New Testament repeatedly refers to believers as "saints." In Ellen White's heretical "never say you're saved" theology, believers who are "in Christ" are viewed as "condemned sinners." However, in New Testament Christianity, believers who are "in Christ" are no longer under condemnation, but are called "saints in Christ." (Phil. 1:1; see also 1 Cor. 1:2, Eph. 1:1, Col. 1:2)

5. Can Ministers eat meat? Is it immoral to eat meat?

Ellen White Holy Bible
Let not any of our ministers set an evil example in the eating of flesh-meat. Let them and their families live up to the light of health reform. Let not our ministers animalize their own nature and the nature of their children. Spalding and Magan, p. 211

The light has come to me for many years that meat eating is not good for health or morals. Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 413

And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover [lamb] with you before I suffer. Luke 22:15

Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. Gen. 9:3

NOTE: The traditional Passover dinner which Jesus ate with His disciples included eating a roasted lamb:

And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Ex. 12:8

When Elijah was by the brook Cherith, the ravens brought him "bread and flesh" to eat (1 Kings 17:6). Why did God feed Elijah with bread and "flesh" if that would set an "evil example"? Why not bread and cucumbers, or bread and carrots? If eating meat was "not good" for morals, then why did God permit Noah's descendants and the Israelites to eat meat for thousands of years? The English dictionary defines "evil" as "sinful". In order for something to be "sinful" it must be a transgression of God's law. Eating clean meat, prepared properly, is in accordance with God's law. Therefore, it cannot be "sinful" nor "evil" because it is not a transgression of God's law.

6. Does God love wicked children?

Ellen White Holy Bible
The Lord loves those little children who try to do right, and he has promised that they shall be in his kingdom. But wicked children God does not love. Appeal to Youth, p. 61
God loves honest-hearted, truthful children, but cannot love those who are dishonest. Ibid., p. 41
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you...that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Matt. 5:44,45,48
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you. Luke 6:27

NOTE: How could God love His worst enemies and yet not love wicked children?

7. A sin to be sick?

Ellen White Holy Bible
It is a sin to be sick; for all sickness is the result of transgression. Health Reformer, Aug. 1, 1866 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. Job 2:7

NOTE: While sickness may have been brought upon this world as a result of Adam's transgresseion, does that mean it is a "sin" to be sick? Job was very ill but God Himself said that Job was "a perfect and an upright man." (Job 2:3) Paul had a "thorn" in his body that was making him weak (see 2 Cor. 12:7-10). Was it a sin for Paul to have this condition in his body? It seems odd for Mrs. White to have made this statement, because she was often sick herself. Her husband and two of her children died of sickness. Are we to believe their sins led to their deaths? If someone dies from a sickness, does that mean that person is eternally lost? After all, if "it is a sin to be sick," and if someone dies while sick, doesn't that equate to dying while in sin?

8. A Temple in the Holy City?

Ellen White Holy Bible
Soon I was lost to earthly things, and was wrapped up in a vision of God's glory. I saw an angel swiftly flying to me. He quickly carried me from the earth to the Holy City. In the city I saw a temple, which I entered. Broadside, Apr. 7, 1847 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. Revelation 21:22 Job 2:7

NOTE: In 1847, while in vision, Ellen White saw the temple in the Holy City. The Bible says there is no temple in the Holy City. This proves her visions are contrary to the Word of God.

9. Wicked Sought to Repent?

Ellen White Holy Bible
Others rushed to the people of God, and begged to be taught how they should escape the judgments of God. Spiritual Gifts vol. 1, p. 199 (1858)

Those who had not prized God's word were hurrying to and fro. They wandered from sea to sea, and from the north to the east, to seek the word of the Lord. Ibid., p. 200.

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands... Rev. 9:20

Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. Rev. 9:21

...and they repented not to give him glory. Rev. 16:9

And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. Rev. 16:11

NOTE: Mrs. White portrays the wicked as regretting their decision and turning to the people of God for instruction. She describes how they were seeking for the word of God. This is not at all the picture portrayed in the book of Revelation. The wicked are repeatedly described as impenitent during the last plagues.

Discard whatever contradicts the Bible

Ellen White wrote:

The Bible must be your counselor. Study it, and the testimonies God has given; for they never contradict His Word.2

The evidence above demonstrates Ellen White's testimonies contradict God's Word. Since they conradict his Word, and since "testimonies God has given...never contradict His Word," then the only conclusion possible is that Ellen White's "testimonies" are not from God.
